I’ve heard it said that “if you fail to plan, you plan to fail”and there is great wisdom and truth in that saying. When we don’t know what our plans are, where we are headed, where we are going, we may very well doom ourselves to plans gone awry whether that’s in business, in creating a party, or organizing your space.
In organizing it is important to know where the client wants to go when organizing. Often when I work with clients they are in a state of overwhelm. Some don’t know how to proceed and others know more clearly what they need and where they want to go; they just don’t know how to get there. That is my job to help assess what they need and to create a plan of action so they know how to get there. I listen to what they need and decipher what the underlying issues are. Externally it’s about their stuff, while internally there are things that they need help with that produced the clutter in the first place.
Once we know what our approach will be, we start by opening boxes, bags, closets, garages or wherever there is stuff that has been hiding and out of sight. My job is to bring it to light so a decision can be made on it and the items can be discarded or saved. Once we have cleared the unnecessary, we start with what we want to keep and how we want to store it. Does it need to be put away in bins in the garage? Does it need to be hung up in a closet, folded, repacked into a kitchen cupboard? Do the many papers need to be scanned into a computer, shredded, filed or put in boxes out of an office space so precious room can be utilized for more important things?
Piles of things are unmade decisions. I get these myself when I don’t take action on a specific piece of mail or a series of books that I need to decide what their fate is. If we made regular decisions about our things, we wouldn’t have the piles and the overflow that clutters our lives. My job is to help clients clarify where they are going and what they want to do next. With a goal in mind, we have a direction with which to follow and things start getting done. It is exciting to watch a space transform and to see the client get excited about his or her living space. They feel different in it as a result.
